Jim Houlton and Paul Milnthorpe will be taking part in one of the world's toughest rowing races when they compete in the 2009 Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race. The challenge begins when they set off from La Gomera, Canary Islands, in December 2009 in their attempt to break the doubles record, (or at very least beat Cracknell and Fogle's time) in the race to Antigua! The race begins in La Gomera and ends in Antigua, 2935 miles (2500 nautical miles) away. The record time for the crossing by a two man crew is around 40 days, with the average time being between 50 and 70 days, depending on a weather, currents etc. The race starts at the beginning of December as this is when the hurricane season ends. At other times of the year storms form and travel along the latitudes of the race. At these latitudes the temperatures can regularly reach over 35ºC, so rather than the cold weather expected in December, high temperatures are the norm. |
